Neuro-Developmental Treatment for Cerebral Palsy and Autism Spectrum Disorder

Course Description

      This four-day workshop is designed to acquaint Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech & Language Pathologists with the Neuro-Developmental Treatment approach. The information presented will introduce current NDT principles including beginning assessment and problem-solving techniques. Participants will improve both their observational skills and direct handling skills to improve function in their pediatric CP and ASD clients. Through lecture, hands-on labs and practicums with children, participants will increase their knowledge and confidence. It is recommended that participants wear comfortable clothing for the treatment labs. Group discussion will address current worldwide trends in pediatric therapy, and include the integration of NDT within the participants’ practices.

 

Instructor

          Kim Barthel is a world-renowned occupational therapist and teacher, actively supporting multi-disciplinary function and healing in many cultures. A pioneer in reinforcing the importance of relationship in therapy, she is known for blending cutting-edge developments in neuroscience with the art of compassionate inquiry. With 30+ years as an OT, Kim is an advanced NDT instructor with a wealth of experience teaching Movement, Attachment, Sensory Processing, and Mental Health. Kim’s mission is to support the conscious evolution of the human spirit.

Learning Objectives:

 participants will be able to:

  1. Achieve a basic understanding of the components of movement in typical development 0-12 months.
  2. Achieve a basic understanding of the components of atypical movement experienced by children with Neuromotor challenges (cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder)
  3. Achieve a basic understanding of the components of normal postural reactions necessary for motor function.
  4. Achieve a preliminary understanding of neurodevelopmental therapy concepts and principles.
